"Foods are medicines", an old folk saying in oriental culture, is taking on increasing significance in modern society. Scientific data on food functions relating to health promotion and disease prevention have been rapidly accumulating. In this Symposium, we will discuss the role of food factors and natural products in anti-aging, which may lead to the development of strategies for preventing diseases including cancer as well as lifestyle-related and neurodegenerative diseases. Such pathological conditions can seriously undermine the Quality of Life (QOL) of those living in today's "longevity society."
Integrative or complementary applications of dietary supplements in modern medicine will be a second topic discussed at this Symposium. Supplements may have biological activity to control cancer growth or augment the therapeutic efficacy of modern cancer treatment modalities, including radiation and chemotherapy, in a holistic manner. We thus need to know more about the underlying mechanisms of dietary supplements such as anti-oxidation and synergistic interactions among dietary components and herbal components in multi-component herbal formulae.
We, the organizers, hope that many researchers from around the world who have common interests in these subjects will convene in Niigata in the fall of 2008 and enjoy mutually beneficial science and social exchanges.

Niigata City is located on the western coast of the main island of Japan and is well known worldwide for producing the best Kome (rice) in Japan. Besides Kome, Niigata City also produces many agricultural products including fruits and vegetables, flowers and sea products. The advantages of such agricultural and natural resources have made Niigata City a major hub for the food manufacturing industry. Many fine food products, including health-oriented and anti-aging functional foods, are available. The city has held the World Forum on Flowers and Foods every year since 2005, and a number of Symposium, congresses and exhibitions have been scheduled for the general public. The International Niigata Congress and Symposium on Diet and Health is the major event of the Forum. Each year, several expert speakers are invited from around the world to discuss specific topics, such as "The Safety and Supply of Foods" (2005), "Food Functions" (2006), and "Shoku-iku (food culture education)" this year. The Symposium has also addressed related topics such as "Food safety: risk and benefit," "Health beneficial functions of food," and "Sensing, taste, flavor and texture."in 2007, there was a special emphasis on "Umami."
For the 2008 Symposium, the organizers have decided to address the role of functional foods and supplements in Integrative Medicine and how they are related to the development of anti-aging and anti-cancer strategies. The Organizing Committee cordially invites you to join with us to discuss these interesting topics in Niigata on November 29-30, 2008.
